Fiinovation Complaints – Telecommunications: Strengthening Rural India
Total Articles: 42
In ancient India, communication manifested itself in various forms. Mythological and historical references mention the use of scrolls and messengers to write, carry, deliver and read messages by a sender to a receiver.
Fiinovation Complaints - The technological advancement in telecommunications has resulted in making it an engine of development in India. In 1999, the government of India made a number of changes in the mobile communications regulatory and policy framework, lending importance to the need for technological advancement in the sector. This provided a platform to many service providers to explore the Indian market, and bring this mode of communication to every household.
Since the time of mobile revolution, India has not looked back. Mobiles have reached to the areas where accessibility remains an issue. Currently, after 15 years of modifications in the policies, India has more mobile phone subscribers than toilets in households. This justifies the growth and transition of the industry since 2000. According to Census 2011, approximately 72.18 percent of the total population lives in the rural areas, out of which only 44 percent forms the total rural mobile market. The evolving Information Communications Technology (ICT) market has been unable to provide services to the rural market due to limited reach of optical fibre network. The reasons have also accounted for low number of internet users in rural areas as compared to internet users in the urban region. However, in the last year, the telecom secretary, Rakesh Garg, with support from the government had announced spreading the reach of telecom facility to 100 percent rural populace by 2017-18.
Fiinovation Complaints - The internet has been recognized as the driving force for economic development. Apart from facilitating information and knowledge sharing among various markets, communication supports the farmers in the rural India to explore opportunities in agriculture and traditional trade. This has improved their livelihoods by leveraging internet to build human resources’ capacities. For instance, the farmers can be informed and trained upon using the internet communication facility to clarify market prices, weather information and much more. Fiinovation Reviews suggests that such projects can be replicated to other industries like - cottage industries, fisheries etc.
Effective utilization of the information technology shall also support children in accessing information apart from their textbooks and lessons at school. Frequent exposure of children to computers technology can help them gain knowledge at a click of a mouse. The corporations, through the new CSR mandate, can facilitate implementation of planned and organized ways to educate children through ICT material and infrastructure. The youth skilled in information and telecommunications technology can assist and support the farmers and other lesser educated people in accessing information using information technology. This would have a ripple effect on improving the standard of living of their families in the rural areas. While the youth shall be employed in their village, this would prevent them from migrating to urban regions. The farmers or the rural population shall have the opportunity to study and contribute to economic activities.
In 2015, India ranked seventh in terms of GDP in the world. According to Fiinovation Reviews CSR can play a pivotal role in creation of telecommunication infrastructure, leading to inclusive growth.
