How To Deal With Asthma
Total Articles: 10
You probably know someone who has asthma or you might be asthmatic yourself. How could you best address that respiratory problem? For you to know the answer to that question, you first need to have basic knowledge about the respiratory trouble. This article will help you understand what asthma is and what triggers asthma attacks as well as present available treatments for the problem.
Asthma—a Common Respiratory Problem
Did you know that in the United States alone, some 26 million people have asthma? Asthma refers to a chronic lung problem due to the inflammation of an individual’s airways due to exposure to certain allergens. Many of those who have asthma remain unaware of their medical condition, primarily because they often mistake their symptoms for common coughing spells, especially if the symptoms are not severe.
How, then, can you identify whether someone has asthma or not? Frequent fits of coughing during the night, especially when laughing, are among the common symptoms of asthma. Such coughing fits usually come with a sudden tightening of the chest and wheezing. Often, individuals who have asthma find themselves easily out of breath. Ignoring symptoms of asthma can prove to be fatal. Individuals who do not seek medical help for their symptoms may find themselves in a deadly situation.
There are several factors that can trigger an asthma attack. The most common trigger of asthma attacks are allergens such as dust mites and pollen. Irritants such as strong fumes can also trigger asthma attacks. Since individuals who have asthma have weak lungs, exposure to persons who have cough and colds may make them prone to attack. Another factor that can trigger an asthma attack involves emotions. When an asthmatic individual experiences a particularly strong emotion, strong enough to affect their normal breathing patterns, they are most likely to experience an asthma attack.
How long do asthma symptoms last? Medical experts note that asthma symptoms usually do not last for more than a few minutes. However, in serious cases of asthma, such symptoms may persist for hours and even days.
If you feel that something is wrong with your respiratory system, medical experts highly advise that you see your doctor as soon as possible. It is best that you address your respiratory problem immediately before it gets worse than it already is.
Doctors may recommend several forms of medication for those who have asthma. Asthma medications come in two types—long-term control medicines and quick-relief medicines. Some individuals, however, hesitate to take any form of medication due to the fear of side effects. If that is true in your case, do not hesitate to speak with your doctor about such concern. Your doctor can help you feel comfortable about a certain medication that can help ease your condition.
Medical experts recommend quick-relief medicines during an asthma attack. Such medicines are bronchodilators that work by expanding your airways and allowing a regular flow of air into the lungs. Bronchodilators also work by clearing your lungs from mucus to improve your breathing. You should remember, however, that quick-relief medications can only serve to stop asthma symptoms but not address the cause of such symptoms.
On the other hand, your doctor may recommend that you take long-term control medicines on a daily basis to prevent the onset of asthma attacks. You may also want to consider taking dietary supplements that can help you address your respiratory problem. For instance, you may want to consider taking selenium supplements. The benefits of selenium supplementation are far-reaching and include alleviating asthma symptoms. If you would like to take such supplements, do speak with your healthcare provider so you would know your recommended dosage.
