For those of you who have spent any time in church, you know that most churches have their own thing when it comes to furniture, decorations, and other implements of worship. However, regardless of what church you attend or what faith you follow, you will notice that there is one near-universal item that exists in just about every church and that is the pulpit. The pulpit is the podium from which the preacher delivers his message each and every Sunday. But, what is the significance of having a pulpit in the church? Read on to find out more.

Believe it or not, there is a lot of architecture that goes into building a church. And a lot of this architecture is steeped in symbolic meaning. For example, Great basilica churches are built in such a way that they appear as an upside down ship (or ark) that has the ships hull or ribs showing through. Many cathedrals are built in the shape of a cross and the use of stained glass in the windows of many churches were used to portray various biblical stories for those who cannot read.

While the churches of today are more varied in their construction techniques and don't rely ...
... as heavily on historic symbolism in their construction methods, there are still vestiges of Old World religion incorporated into most. For example, many still use raised platforms in the front of the churches with three steps that are to represent the holy Trinity and others.

And that, brings us to the pulpit.

Even churches of ancient times had pulpits, although they were known then as scrolls. Even back in the days of Jesus, when the word of God was read, the minister would stand above the congregation, read from the work and then reroll the scroll and retake his place among the others. This gave a certain reverence to the reader.

And while there is some difference of opinion as to when the pulpit as we know it came onto the scene, it has been an integral part of helping various ministers deliver their messages for many hundreds of years.

The elevation of the pulpit is symbolic, not as a way to give elevation to the individual delivering the message, but to the holy message itself. This is why many churches have removed the pulpit from the forefront of the church and placed it over to the side, giving deference to the liturgical events of the sermon and of other events such as communion and other events.

Regardless of where your church places their pulpits, it's important to note that United Crystal Creations can help you create perfect custom podiums and pulpits for your needs.
