Series 65 Exam Basics
The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority administers the Series 65 exam. The FINRA is the self-regulating body that sets the rules and policies for the investment industry. The Series 65 exam, also known as the Investment Advisor State Law Exam, includes 140 questions, though only 130 of them are scored. To pass the test, you must answer at least 94 questions, or 72 percent, correctly. You’ll have 180 minutes to complete the exam. During your Series 65 prep course, you’ll not only study for the exam, but you may have the opportunity to take several practice tests that simulate both the types of questions and the duration of the exam.
Manage Your Nerves
Feeling nervous is part of taking an exam. Those butterflies can work to your advantage by keeping your mind alert and your reactions quick. However, if you’re too stressed out, then you risk harming your performance. Studying for the test is one of the best ways to build your confidence. If your Series 65 prep course has been thorough, you’ll go into your exam feeling ready to tackle even the toughest questions. Knowing what to expect can keep you calmer. Speak with others in your field who have taken the test. They can paint a picture of the test conditions. In addition, be sure that your preparation does not consist of cramming during the last week before the test. One of the advantages of enrolling in a course rather than studying on your own, is that the class will have a pace that prepares you over a number of weeks. You’ll think more clearly if you spend the nights leading up to the test sleeping rather than cramming.
What to Study
Your Series 65 prep should include the four main categories included on the exam. Here are the four areas that will be tested: economic factors and business information; investment vehicle characteristics; client investment recommendations and strategies; laws, regulations, guidelines and prohibition on unethical practices. Within each category, you’ll have a number of different questions to answer. When you study, it’s helpful to know which areas have the most questions. That type of information should be included in the study materials that come with your course.
A comprehensive Series 65 prep course offers you a structured lesson plan that can help you pass your exam and begin your career as an investment advisor.
