Toyota Unveils 2016 Toyota Rav4 Hybrid At New York International Auto Show
Total Articles: 3
Toyota has officially taken the wraps off its long-awaited hybrid compact utility vehicle. The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid was revealed along with the rest of the refreshed and expanded RAV4 lineup at the 2015 New York International Auto Show. The latest in a long line of Toyota gasoline-electric vehicles, the RAV4 Hybrid will come to market this fall, fully 15 years after the first Prius was sold in the United States.
While official fuel economy and power specs have not yet been released, count on the RAV4 Hybrid to have much improved fuel economy as well as better acceleration and power than the gasoline-only RAV4. The company has quietly acknowledged the new hybrid setup will offer substantially more than the 176 horsepower in the internal combustion model.
Additional clues as to the makeup of the refreshed RAV4 can be gleaned from the company's Lexus NX300h Hybrid, from which most of the RAV4's underpinnings are drawn. This likely means it will have a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine with an electric motor at each axle, and all-wheel drive with power distributed via a continuously variable transmission. The NX300h with all-wheel drive is rated at 33 mpg city/30 mpg highway/32 mpg combined, while the most efficient 2015 RAV4 with all-wheel drive is rated at 22/29/25.
The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid will be available only in higher-trim XLE and Limited models. Like the rest of the new RAV4 lineup, however, it will feature sharper, more aggressive exterior styling for a sleek and dynamic posture. The changes start at the nose where the fog lights are recessed into a beefier-looking front fascia. The design draws the eye across the lower grille where it extends nicely into the lower rocker panel creating a refined, flowing exterior visual. The new look includes available LED headlights and daytime running lights. A new rear bumper and lift gate with available LED taillights provides an excellent finishing touch.
Customer feedback regarding the old RAV4's functional but unremarkable interior pushed Toyota to add more refinement and technology to the new model. Improvements include the expanded use of premium materials throughout, as well as a new 4.2-inch display that sits in a refreshed gauge cluster. A newly available 7-inch touch screen in the center stack is both functional and visually appealing. An additional USB port has been added to the front row, while a 12-volt power outlet is located in the rear. There's also a feature demanded by nearly all RAV4 owners: deeper cup holders for tall mugs.
A long list of convenience technologies include the new Bird’s Eye View Monitor, which uses four cameras: two on the side-view mirrors and two in the rear. These allow the driver to view the area around the vehicle for easier parking. The system also has a feature called perimeter scan that produces a rotating 360-degree view of what's happening around the vehicle.
The 2016 RAV4 will be among the first U.S. models with Toyota Safety Sense, a new multi-feature safety package that bundles cutting edge safety technologies including pre-collision warning and braking systems, lane departure alert, automatic high beams, a pedestrian pre-collision system and dynamic radar cruise control.
RAV4 will also offer front and rear parking sonar, available Smart Key, and a Home link garage door opener. All RAV4 XLE, SE and Limited models will come standard with Sirius XM All-Access Radio with a three-month complimentary trial.
The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid promises to have great appeal for young buyers who want affordability and high mileage in a capable, versatile compact utility vehicle.
