As defined by the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council, carton sealing tape is a flexible strip of paper or plastic with an adhesive coating on one or both sides that can be glued or adhered to any surface at room temperature.

As the term implies, a single-coated adhesive tape has adhesive on one side and a foil or polymeric film component on the other. The adhesive side may be made of silicone or acrylic, effective sealing substances known for their versatility and compatibility with different containers. Masking, and carton sealing tapes are all examples of single-coated adhesive tape.

Meanwhile, a double-coated adhesive tape has a polymeric film coating on both sides; membrane switch and medical tapes fall under this category. These kinds of tapes may not be appropriate for the simple packaging needs of a small convenience store, however. Instead, a strong stretch wrap film or a pliable bubble wrap could help ensure the safe delivery of certain items and even appliances.
