Spirit Airlines, well known for its various cheap travel options, including cheap airplane tickets, and cheap vacation packages, has announced plans for three more routes from Boston, meaning Spirit will soon be offering 10 nonstop routes out of the city.

The new routes out of Boston are Cleveland, Detroit, and Las Vegas. Spirit claims this decision was made because its low fares have “resonated with Midwestern travelers.”

Spirit’s new Boston routes will commence on April 16th. The airline’s daily Boston to Las Vegas service will run year round, whereas the Cleveland and Detroit routes will be seasonal, operating through November.

Spirit will face existing airline competition on all three of its new routes:

• Jet Blue flies nonstop from Boston to Las Vegas. Virgin American recently commenced nonstop flights on this route, but is only offering seasonal service that will end on April 28th.

• Delta and JetBlue offer nonstop flights on the Detroit to Boston route.

• Today only United offers nonstop between Cleveland and Boston, but JetBlue has announced that it will commence service on this route on April 30th. This route will soon go from being under served to having significant competition.

Other Spirit destinations from Boston include Atlantic City, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, FL, Myrtle Beach, SC, and West Palm Beach.

Spirit’s largest hub is Fort Lauderdale. Over time though it has added several focus cities where it flies between five to 15 nonstop routes. Recently expanded focus cities include Chicago O’Hare, Cleveland, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Houston Bush Intercontinental, Kansas City, and Phoenix.

Spirit’s multi focus city approached has helped the self-described “ultra low cost” airline evolve into one of the country’s most profitable airlines.

Spirit claims that the only factor that enters into its decision to add new routes is whether it can provide the lowest fare and still be profitable. Competitor route decisions, according to Spirit, have little impact on its decision making.
