Go With The Pros: Why Professionals Are Best When It Comes To Voiceovers
Total Articles: 238
Thanks to the mass availability of computers, many tasks which were previously left to professionals are now accomplishable from the comfort of a home computer. From photo editing and printing to music production, many individuals feel content and confident in creating and finishing their work themselves.
However, there is a reason professionals are professionals, and some tasks are still best left to the experts. Especially in the arts, the difference of a professional’s input and expertise can make the difference between night and day.
Voice over recording is one of these arts, which benefits greatly from a “don’t try this at home” approach.
First, though it may just be speaking, there is a lot of talent that goes into voice acting. Voice over talents are trained and experienced in enunciating in the clearest possible manner; you may not pick up on your own idiosyncrasies of speech, but generally, the average person speaks to quickly and fails to enunciate. A trained voice actor will deliver the best possible performance which, especially when you consider your potential audience – elderly folks, people for whom your language is not their mother tongue – will be more easily intelligible.
Second, audio professionals have the proper space. Unlike a home setup, which contains ambient sounds and is not acoustically designed to record in, a studio will be built to record the best possible quality of sound. Voice over studios are padded to be soundproof, and record the cleanest, clearest sound possible.
Professional voice overs equipment also makes a world of difference. Microphones are more capable, with better mixing boards and recording software to capture the narration. Again, the difference between a home setup may result in a hiss, a loss of important frequencies, or another issue which, although perhaps not immediately audible to the average listener, can be an issue for reproduction or those harder of hearing.
Last, voice over talent agencies’ engineers are trained to tweak equipment to record the performance at its peak. For example, they would know which frequencies to highlight in a female performance, versus a male’s; they would know to equalize recordings based on given voice talents – for example, equalizing bass if the performer is particularly baritone. They can edit in spaces where needed, or fade in and out as required. All this to say that professionals can really polish a product.
In short, if requiring a professional voice over, it’s one field that is best left to the professionals. Synapse Talent, a professional voice over talent agency, is a great place to start that offers all of there services in one.
