What Are The Premier League Odds For The Top 4 Places This Season?
Total Articles: 3
The Premier League odds for a top 4 and Champions League place fluctuate throughout a league campaign. Here is some insight into how the teams are doing at the halfway stage and how I think they will work out towards the ‘business end’ of the season. Firstly let’s ignore Man City and Chelsea, who are battling for the title and have no chance in missing out on the top 2 positions!
At the time of writing there are a number of challengers at the top of the table that have surprised everyone this season. Southampton for example sit in third at the moment with some favourable games to come and the majority of their harder fixtures completed. The key to their success seems to be that they have a small group of players that gel together and also understand the managers’ tactics and instructions very well. It will be interesting to see what happens when they get a few injuries in the squad and if they can maintain the challenge, which will be welcomed by all those who support teams outside the traditional ‘big 4’ clubs. Okay, maybe not Portsmouth fans then!
West Ham fall into this category too following a very good start to the campaign, but the Premier League odds on them finishing in the top 4 have never been particularly low with punters and bookies alike assuming that they will fall away at some point. Draws in recent home games that they should perhaps have won if they want to keep up the challenge suggests that this is indeed the case.
It should be said that Manchester United are seen as slight surprises to be in the top 4 at this time too, with some suggesting they might struggle, but a lot of people actually suggested that United might even win the league at one point so it’s difficult to gauge exactly where they should be at this time. Although saying that, after spending over £150m on players in the Summer maybe they should be winning the league at a canter by now!
There are of course teams that should have done better that are battling to stay with the top teams or, indeed, have fallen away completely. Liverpool and (to a much worse extent) Everton have both struggled for consistency this year due to form, tactics, new players not firing and injuries to key players, and they will both have an uphill task to reach the CL places. Tottenham and Arsenal have also had poor starts to the season but you feel they have a lot more to give and can put real pressure on the sides above them in the coming weeks and months.
If I was a betting man, which I am, I’d be looking for the best Premier League odds for the following teams to have a chance of the top 4 places. Obviously Man City and Chelsea are in, but I would suggest that Arsenal will make it in, as they always do! That leaves one place between Southampton, Man United, Liverpool and Spurs for me. As an outside bet, with their players returning, I would plump for Liverpool as that is where the best value is. Should be a great battle though whatever happens!
