Remembrance Day At Oak Heights School In Hounslow
Total Articles: 9
Students have been busy since they have been back as they all participated in fund raising for Remembrance Day. As this is a very important day, the whole school took part in making their own hand made poppies and bands and sold them in order to raise money for charity. Selling poppies and bands was the idea of raising income and using the money made as a donation to contribute towards helping people in need. The donation went to chosen charities which were The Royal Legion and Help for Heroes. Students sold their poppies to teachers and other students within the school. During swimming they also asked for donations selling their poppies at the local leisure centre. This was a good experience as they were educated on why we celebrate Remembrance Day and what the soldiers had done for us to be living how we do presently. This was also a very good business exercise for the children as they developed their entrepreneurial skills.
Music lessons are on the go as the students had a lovely time within their first lesson and were looking forward to their next lesson. Receiving good feedback has given us high hopes to continue lessons and may introduce the lessons to the higher years within the future. This gives the students a break from the daily book work and be creating music and seeing what they are able to do with their music talents ! Knowing the student talents will allow us to allocate specific roles to the students when we bring our Christmas music band together. Working close with the children will allow us to see if they should proceed with music in the long run. We hope to bring out some talent within our school!
As part of Children in Need week as a school we have decided to hold many events to raise money to donate towards the charity and help many children all over. We as a school thought it is very important that the children know how lucky they are to be in the position they are in and to appreciate the food and education they are able to gain within their daily lives as there are many unfortunate children around the world who are either starving to death or are suffering from many fatal diseases. Having a school council we decided for each year to create their own way to participate into a school assembly. The year 10 and 11 decided to create scenarios where they showed unfortunate children appreciating small amounts of water and food being received. We had the children from year 7, 8 and 9 write poems relevant to Children in Need week.
Over the next week we have many activities which will be held by specific students where all students are welcome to participate by giving a small donation which will be going towards the charity. Organising events is also very important as it helps the children to be creative and expand on their organisational skills. Children also understand the importance of holding responsibilities.
