Such a fascinating subject. Hypnosis has been around for a very long time, but it seems that we are just starting to comprehend it's power. The following is a quick overview of hypnosis through the years, and you may be quite intrigued by a few of its uses.
Hypnosis as a term was coined by doctor James Braid in 1841, but before that had been called Mesmerism. The reason Braid felt compelled to update the name was he had discovered a new understanding of how hypnosis actually works. Students of Mesmerism had thought that it was because of some unique power or knowledge they held, that caused the state of mesmerism. But, Braid came to the realisation that it was not down to any special power the Mesmerist had developed, but rather what the subject did inside their own mind that caused the hypnotic trance.
Emile Coue was the earliest pioneer to write a manual on self-hypnosis. The work he did complimented the findings of James Braid in previous years. More and more people now started to explore hypnosis through the eyes of a participant, rather than one controlled by the hypnotist.
Respected Doctor of psychology ...
... Professor Sigmond Freud strangely rejected hypnotherapy as a fools game. As a result of this slandering of hypnosis, lots of professionals shied away from it's use at the time. His opinion radically changed on hypnosis after the print of his books, however his earlier opinions remained in the teachings of psychologists in that era. Thankfully it's because of the stage performers carrying on the use of hypnosis, that it is still around today.
A different style of hypnotherapy Milton Erickson in the 50's. It began to move away from older classical approaches, and became known as indirect hypnosis. Working with people who previously couldn't be hypnotised became a speciality of Dr Ericksons.
Also around the same period as Doctor Milton Erickson, a man called Dave Elman was demonstrating to dentists and doctors a more direct approach to hypnosis. Dave Elman taught a very direct style of hypnosis for pain control and traditional analysis. Even now a lot of his approaches are being used for their rapid results.
The author of 'The Encyclopaedia of Stage Hypnosis' was Ormond McGill, also known as 'The Dean'. McGill was very well known for his excellent therapeutic work. He influenced many therapeutic and hypnotic approaches that have influenced a great many hypnotists today. Ormond died in 2005.
Considered by many to be the most respected hypnotist of this generation, Gil Boyne passed away in 2010. Gill did tremendous insights in the study of hypnotheraputic-analysis, which has expanded the methods developed by Stage hypnotist Dave Elman a great deal. The classic work 'Transforming Therapies' was his contribution to hypnosis today.
With the resources available nowadays, today's hypnotists have much greater access to information than ever before. More and more life threatening conditions are starting to use the help of hyno-analysis, thanks in no small part to the discoveries made with the help of information sharing. Some of the more well known interventions, like stopping smoking and losing weight have also greatly progressed.
