The importance of Indian Ferro alloys has become quite imperative as they are used in the production of special alloy steel, mild steel, stainless steel and carbon steel in the country. Every year India's steel production is increasing thereby the consumption of ferro alloys is also increasing. The country has enough capacity to produce the required amount of ferro alloys to be used for domestic steel industry. Due to competitive imports, India is working laboriously to raise efficiency and economic health of producing units with 62% of installed capacity.

The ferro alloys industry work with three basic types and they are Ferro Silico Manganese which is manufactured using high grade of raw material. Then comes Ferro Manganse which is a ferro alloy with high content of manganese, is made by heating a mixture and the last one is the Ferro Silicon, an alloy which is produced by combining iron and 15% to 90% of silicon. Ferro Silicon or FeSi is widely used in color or non-color metallurgy industry as the most important deoxidizing material. In addition, it is essentially utilized as a deoxidizing material as a ...
... part of steel composite assembling commercial enterprises, in creating cast iron and steel, creating metallic structure and granulation in the trim of amalgam and non-compound cast irons, renovation of other Ferro composites, and above all in the structure of nouvelle combination steel.

Then again, lately there has been a lack in the accessibility of manganese metal and the commercial enterprises are striving tricky to deliver 30 % of manganese compounds as HC ferro manganese and the rest is 70 % is silico manganese. The generation of HC ferro manganese stayed unstable in the last three yeas. The aggregate yield in India was recorded at 390,000 tons in 2010-11, an exceptional climb from 341883 tons in the previous year. While, In 2008-09 the yield of HC ferro manganese was seen at 372,286 tons It is to be noticed that the production of silico manganese remained consistently higher from the level of 889,434 tonnes in 2008-09 to 1066485 tonnes and 1250000 tonnes in 2009-10 and 2010-11 respectively.

The experts are of the opinion that any measure applied to steel Industry will automatically be applied to ferro alloys for Iron and Steel. Thus, arises the need that ferro alloys to get singled out from any customs related measures to reduce the customs duty structure on iron and steel, given its non-level playing field. In this way Government's revenue will also increase by levying higher import customs duty. Infact, the government should try to increase import duty by 7.5% in order to protect the domestic industry from cheap imports. And at present, import duty stands at 5%.

Barring Russia, India presumably ranks as the world's biggest supplier of high-quality manganese ore. Next in the order come the high-grade manganese ore deposits of the African continent on the Gold Coast and in South Africa and also those of Brazil. The ever rising demands for manganese ore made by overseas markets in U.S.A. and other European nations have been largely met by the Ferro Manganese Exporter India. Our country has carved its own niche of raw unprocessed ore of high grade. India made a profit of around 21 crores through the export of 1.4 million tons of manganese ore during 1952. Most recent estimates figure the reserves of high-grade manganese ores in India at about 60 million tons against the previously accepted figure of 25 million tons, with much greater reserves of the sub-standard grades of these ores the sub-standard grades have so far been highly neglected or wholly discarded. The indigenous manufacture of exportable grades of Indian Ferro Alloys in place of large shipments of raw ore should be regarded as of utmost national importance.
