The Redesigned And Versatile Mazda2
Total Articles: 1
Sporty. Stylish. Sleek. Those words are not typically associated with a subcompact car. The all-new Mazda2 can be described as that and so much more. This new model debuted in its home of Japan in October and it is receiving some high praise from those who have seen it.
The Mazda2 proves that downsizing your vehicle does not mean you have to compromise on features. This car is a total redesign of previous models and used Skyactiv technology-engineering that combines lightweight construction with fuel-efficient engines and transmissions. This is the fourth Mazda to use Skyactiv technology but it is a first for the Mazda2.
The outgoing model was the 2008 World Car of the Year, so the new model has a lot to live up to. The all-new Mazda2 is slightly larger by about size inches and gained an inch in height, giving the new model more head and leg room for driver and passengers. The width of the vehicle remains unchanged. This model is also heavier than the previous model. Mazda stuck with its Kodo-Soul of Motion design philosophy in creating this model. In appearance it similar to the 3 and 6 models with flowing lines and a similar looking grille, making this a sharp looking car.
The Mazda2 is available in a six speed automatic and a six speed manual. The six speed manual is recommended for maximum amusement while driving. Though it will unlikely be seen here in the US, the Japanese model has a 1.5 liter Skyactiv turbo diesel engine. Here in the states you will see a 1.3 liter Skyactiv gasoline engine.
Inside the car you will find a unique combination of sporty and luxury with a modern and visually appealing design. What you will not find is a lot of dials and buttons on the dash. Compared to most vehicles, the dash is pretty clean and goes for a minimalist look. Most functions are controlled by a dial that is located below the gear level. It uses Mazda Connect infotainment system, which is app-based and will be open to third party developers. Information will be displayed on a seven inch central display screen, which is located on the dash.
Safety features have been improved with the new model. The larger windshield and A-pillars shift 3.9 inches further forward, creating well-rounded visibility. Upgraded safety features include blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and a rear cross traffic system.
Even though the car was debuted in Japan in the fall, it will be awhile before we will be seeing it in the US. The Mazda2 is expected to reach the United States in mid-2015 and U.S. specifications and prices will be announced closer to the sale date.
