While Sergey Brin, the co-founder of Google proudly demonstrated the Google Glass, it was becoming rather clear that it is something that Google has been eyeing for its future. The demonstration involved skydivers streaming their decent live but the glass will be capable of several other amazing possibilities. The Google Glass is still in its beta testing phase and there is quite some time before it is available for consumers but developers have already got the hint of capabilities through 2013’s “Explorer” edition purchases. Google is taking time for the launch for specific reasons. Considered to be the next big contribution of Google, it wants to come up with a fool-proof developer platform.
In the past decade, several developer platforms have launched including the Facebook platform in 2007 and the iOS App Store in 2008. The Facebook developer platform was the first of its kind of social apps platform. It ensures that thousands of application developers get to reach millions of users with utility app, games, business apps and other tools. Soon after Facebook, MySpace, Friendster and Bebo launched their developer platforms.
With Apple, Steve Jobs was initially reluctant for an app store but fortunately for Apple it has now grown into a huge platform with more than 30 billion downloads, more than 650,000 applications and developers have been paid more than $5 billion. The iOS store introduces us Instagram, Foursquare, Flipboard and Path!
While Google came up with the Android store, it was a bit late in the catching up. However, Google Glass Application development gives the company another chance to craft a fascinating future for the developer community. Clearly, developers are all excited and are ready to push the frontiers of computing. Money of course will be following without being asked for!
What developers need to know is that no Glass user would be downloading Tetris on his/her eyewear. People want newer boundaries for augmented reality. Google Glass creates impeccable platform for mapping, business addresses, product reviews, apart from the more functional applications. In the coming few years, several new businesses would be built upon Google Glass technology and this can only be a good thing. In 2015, Intel will be providing the chips for Google Glass 2.
While the first Google Glass version is still a less used device, it will take time for the technology to spread. Developers should also understand that with Google Glass application development, he/she is trying to communicate/motivate very specific demographics – people looking for more functioning and easing out their lifestyle than the smart phone and similar wearable technology was capable of.
Google itself has laid out a detailed list of specifications, dos and don’ts for anyone looking to contribute to the Glassware store. Some of these instructions include exclusivity, compatibility, user friendliness and complete updates. Google won’t allow developer to sell the same SDK to competing devices/platforms to make it unique in itself. While users across the globe are ready to dish out the money required to own a Google Glass, Application development needs to be much more specifying and is completely different from the smart apps we have been making all these years.
