Generally For normal sized earring hooks, 5 cm wire will be required, you will have to use fine grade of sandpaper to smooth the ends of wire.

While twisting the wires into your desired figure, you will have to find out if the ends are smooth enough or not by touching them your fingertips. They must be smooth to the touch.
