Choosing the best yoga mat is a great investment for your health and future, especially when the right type and size is chosen which suits you best.

The right type will provide you comfort and security when things can get slippery with sweat, or when you need more or less stability or padding.
Here's a list of questions you can ask to get you started

Question 1 - How much space do you have to practise in?

Yes this an important point indeed. You may need a "buffer zone" from other people in your class, so your mat will help you define this need. Of course the roll up bigger, but it may be well worth itchy. If however you are small or are travelling, a Best Yoga Mats may be preferable for you.

Question 2 - Are you sensitive with any allergies?

Yes this is an issue, so choosing the right product a yoga mat is made from to ensure good health, so be aware of your allergies and sensitivities. Latex may be preferable if you are sensitive, otherwise maybe anything is fine for you.

Question 3 - How much do you want to spend?

A yoga mat lasts a fair while so budget is a worthwhile consideration. Considering the power of yoga and the benefits from the practise, and of course other uses of the mat, I like to invest well, but if you just need something quick and easy, or for a short time, something cheaper may do. You can price check first, its easy to do online or at your specialist shop.

Question 4 - How sensitive is your body?

Some folks are tough and strong, so use a thin mat, and some folks are sensitive, or have injuries, and so a thick mat may be more appropriate. Or you may be planning to do some complex postures which require more padding, then choose thick mat.

Question 5 - How tall are you?

A logical question which is overlooked at times,so ensure the width and length of the mat is best matched to your needs. A good guide is to plan for about 1 foot longer then your height.

Question 6 - Where will you be doing your yoga?

If you are working on a very hard floor, thick is better, and if it's a soft floor of course can do fine with a thin mat. Or a medium size, which suits most conditions, can also work fine.
Question 7 - Are you environmentally minded?

Being eco-friendly also is possible with yoga practise and you can buy mats produced from jute, rubber, Tatami, Cotton, TPE, etc.... its wise to check out each of their performance first and ask if that's suitable for you. You can also ask the company if they care for the environment, and if their production processes work generally with no PVC, and minimal emissions (remember that transport of the product also causes emissions so buying local very cool).

Yoga mats are made worldwide, but mostly they are produced in China, USA and Germany. Check Google for your local producers or ask your local yoga teacher or yoga accessory store how things work .

Question 8 - Do you want a mat which is gorgeous or plain?

"Looking good" does occur in the yoga world. There are some sublimely printed mats, and many in superb colours, and if you are female, this can enhance your practise. If something inspires you to use it, then its a good idea. The main colours are orange, purple and blue, and more colours appear all the time as this industry grows.
