A good computer networking & support service provider should have competence in such diverse environments as Microsoft Windows, Linux, networking, Internet, OC hardware, RS/6000 and AS/400, network security, secured Wifi and Firewalls.

A good computer networking & support service provider should have hands-on experience with major electronics and software retailers including CISCO, IBM and Microsoft.

A good computer networking & support service provider should also be able to maintain the integrity and security of a company's network and the systems connected to it. Extensive knowledge of network connectivity, network security devices, protocols, network types, including fibre optic, wireless, or Cat5, and common operating systems, such as Windows and UNIX is an absolute must.

A good computer networking & support service provider would be responsible responding to troubleshooting emails and calls from clients. The service provider should be able to remotely analyze, diagnose and offer instructions that will help mitigate the problem. They should be able to offer such assistance remotely, as well as in person. If required, they should be able to play an advanced role as an administrator or analyst or computer networking specialists.

They should have the capability of monitoring network access for security threats or bottlenecks or problems with connectivity. They might also be required to configure and maintain security devices to ensure the safety of company systems, software and data.

At the very least, a good computer networking & support service provider should have CompTIA's Top IT consulting services and Security credentials. Additionally, they should have staff with specific networking hardware or software expertise along with advanced-level certifications, such as Cisco's Certified VOIP server setup Professional or Microsoft's Certified Technology Specialist.

Checklist for locating a good computer networking & support service provider:

1. Should have excellent communication skills – one that requires minimal use of technical terms

2. Quick ability to analyze and resolve basic IT networking and technology problems through the application of systematic approaches

3. Provide technical support for planning, design, development and implementation of backup and disaster recovery solutions

4. Ensure integrity of information within the network

5. Audit compliance of IT policies, processes, practices and procedures

6. Provide timely reports that are to the point, easy to read and understand

7. Identify and implement networking strategies that will improve network performance.
