The first thing that one needs to determine is how much power is needed in the home in order to maintain daily activities. The refrigerator and freezer need to stay on to prevent food from spoiling. A few lights can be left on, but every light doesn’t need to stay on in every room. Most generators only have enough room for a few things to be plugged into it, so only the crucial appliances and accessories need to be added. It’s important not to overload the generator because then there won’t be any power source to the home.

A generator should never be used inside the home. It needs to be placed outside in an area that is ventilated. The generator will produce carbon monoxide when it runs, and this is a gas that can cause someone to get very sick or die. Don’t keep the generator in a garage or shed. An open area without a roof is the best place. Make sure it stays dry. It can be placed on a concrete surface or on a pad that doesn’t allow water to get to the equipment. If water gets inside the generator, it could short out the wires. Water could mix with the fuel, and this would cause the equipment not to run properly.

Keep the motor as cool as possible. Oil and gas can be added as needed, but it’s important that the motor not get overheated because it won’t function properly. Don’t add fuel when the motor is hot because it could start a fire. When fueling, try to unplug the appliances so that they don’t cause a spark that could start a fire in the area. Before starting the generator, turn off all of the appliances that are plugged into it until the equipment is running as it should.

If an extension cord is needed to add more appliances, then it should be one that is heavy duty. Some appliances won’t be able to be plugged into the generator because it needs to be kept outside, so an extension cord will be the best option for keeping power to the home. Find a generator that is the right size for the home. There is no sense in spending a lot of money on a large generator that is meant for a business if it will only be used a few times a year in a home. Store the generator in a safe location when it’s not in use. Although it can’t be used in a closed space, it can be stored in a garage or shed.
