Gold is generally not chosen for the purpose as they are considered inconspicuous when worn on the legs as per the Hindu tradition. With elaborate carvings and superfluous scrollwork, they carry a pristine amount of reputation and are worn in an indifferent manner by married women from all walks of life.

According to the Hindu tradition, these fitted toe rings can also be worn on the third and fourth toes also in both left and right legs. Just like the way a western couple wears a wedding ring on their fingers, a women wears a traditional toe ring on her toes to represent her culture as well as her marital status. The law is pretty stringent and non-married women aren’t allowed to wear this item at all. It is followed as a ritual practice and is solely carried out as part of their traditional beliefs.
