The utilization of used cooking oil from restaurants and extended households can be considered as the suitable feedstock for production of biodiesel. The oil which is predominantly disposed can be purified and de-odored using appropriate solvents. Biodiesel is basically a renewable fuel which is produced by the process of trans-esterification of the vegetable oil together with alcohol. Biodiesel is now increasingly utilized in transportation applications after it is successfully blended with the conventional diesel fuels. Fossil fuels like natural gas, coal, and petroleum are connected with adverse environmental impacts like global warming. Biodiesel or biofuel obtained from the natural fats or oil is regarded as a potent substitute for the petrol diesel.
Although fossil fuel cannot be entirely replaced by biodiesel, the following reasons justify its development:
• The emissions of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter from biodiesel are considerably lower than the fossil fuel.
• The biodiesel doesn’t promote global warming because of its blocked carbon cycle.
• The dependence on petroleum is reduced by it.
• Biodiesel offers the market for the manufacture of additional vegetable oils.
Although biodiesel can be effectively manufactured from jatropha seed oil, palm kernel oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, line seed oil, rape seed oil, corn oil, and other feed tock, few research carried out on waste oil and used cooking oils prove that they can be utilized to produce biodiesel efficiently. In developed countries, huge volumes of used cooking oil are produced. Proper management of such used oils poses lots of difficulty because of their possible contamination of land and water resources due to improper disposal. Although some portion of the used oil is utilized in production of soap, majority of this used cooking oil is discharged into our environment. It has been estimated that in America about 100 million gallons used cooking oil is created in each day.
Used oil can be potentially utilized as the effective supply of high-oleic oil. In Canada, about 135,000 tons waste cooking oil is produced each year. In EU nations, this figure is around 700,000-1,000,000 tons per year. UK has been estimated to generate around 200,000 used cooking oil each year. Using used cooking oil for the production of biodiesel also has significant advantages because large volumes of these oils are dumped into landfills and rivers. Therefore, biodiesel production reduces environmental pollution. Because of the expected shortness of traditional fuels along with the environmental concerns, search for other fuel choices has gained attention. With the ever increasing gasoline prices, car owners are looking for the air-friendly and cheaper form of fuel. The need for biodiesel is now felt. Some car owners, who are knowledgeable with the process of manufacturing biodiesels, often make their own biofuel. They utilize used cooking oil or some other resources like palm, canola, soy, or peanut oil. By the appropriate combination of used oil with Methanol and Sodium Hydroxide, an extremely safe and diesel fuel can be created. As a byproduct, glycerin is also produced which can be utilized for producing soap.
