Chiropractors As Social Change Agents

In 1936 a Vienna-born Hungarian named Hans Selye coined the term “stress” and defined it as the nonspecific response of the body to any demand. Most people only acknowledge the psychological aspects of stress without consideration to the physical manifestation of stress. Also, not all stress is bad. Stress can be categorized as eustress or good stress and distress or bad stress.
Selye went further to describe a Three Phase Reaction to Stress that he called “general adaptation syndrome.” Phase one is called the Alarm reaction and is a short duration where the body is in a kind of shock. The second phase is called State of Resistance. While in the second phase the body releases chemicals that increase the body’s ability to adapt and survive the stress by increasing power and speeding reaction time. This phase is often associated with the term “fight or flight.” The third phase is called State of Exhaustion. State of exhaustion is the result of being in the second phase too long. The body has now been depleted of extra chemicals and energy and is now in a state of “burn out.” Symptoms commonly seen in people in Phase three are suppressed immune function, cardiovascular problems, pain and fatigue. The important message here is that stress of any type, if intense and of a long enough duration, will result in damage and degeneration of overall health and well being.
