The ancient Greek ‘hydro’ meaning water and ‘ponos’ meaning labor combined together to form the word ‘Hydroponics’ which means working water. The cultivation of plants in water without soil is the main features of this technique. This technique uses water mixed with nutrients to feed the plants. The technique is used inside a cabinet or box which comprises of Growing beds or trays, Reservoir, Submersible pump, Simple timers and Air Grow lights.

The various mediums used in this system are Grow stones, Coir, Rice Hulls, Perlite, Pumice, Vermiculite, Sand, Gravel, Wood fiber, Sheep wool, Rock wool, Polystyrene packing peanuts etc. The nutrient solution used in this technique is calcium, magnesium, potassium, nitrate, phosphate and dihydrogen phosphate as ions. Fe (iron), Mn (manganese), Cu (copper), Zn (zinc), B (boron), Cl (chlorine), and Ni (nickel) are used as micronutrients. The nutrient is obtained in both liquid and powder form. The liquid form is easy to use as it dissolves in water quickly whereas the powder form is difficult to mix completely. The liquid form is also expensive in comparison to the powdered form. The nutrients have two varieties, one for growing the plants and one for blooming the plants.

Advantages of using this technique:

 Use of soil is not required in this technique.

 High production in stipulated time is obtained.

 The water can be reused as it remains within the system, thus saving the loss of water.

 Pesticides and chemicals used are negligible as less number of fungal and other diseases.

 PH balance of the nutrient can be managed.

 Easy to use by any harvester whether new or experienced farmer.

This system is used nowadays in horticulture also.

This system is used in a box which is available in different sizes with proper ventilation without which the cultivation of the plants will get decayed due to lack of air circulation. Also the moisture content must be in control otherwise Pathogen attack will be there which can destroy the cultivation. This box can be used all through the year as there is no dependency on the weather change. The controlled system helps in growing the plants and herbs with good quality and a 30-50 percentage faster growth. All you have to do in this automatic system is to just check all the parameters after a regular interval of time.

Aeroponics, N.F.T., EB and flow systems and wick systems are the types of this Hydroponics system. The type of grow boxes are easy to use and ready to use. Also these boxes have locking doors which can give safety to the children if present in a home. So you need not to worry about this matter. These boxes have shelves inside them. The humidity and temperature can be seen so can be regulated for different plants when needed. Thus an easy to use grow cabinets using Hydroponics system called Hydroponic grow box can be used to grow indoor plants.
