Qualities Of Good Dental Cpd

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) refers to activities that you as a dental practitioner participate in to maintain and develop knowledge, skills and experience of oral health and oral health care. It is considered as the process of tracking and documenting further education that you undergo as you work, whether in a formal school institution or informal learning methods such as through online distance learning. It also stands for the physical folder or record of your learning experiences beyond that of your initial training or education. It can also be recognized as a documentation of your development as a working professional, which may be of use when situations necessitate you to present evidence of participation in continuing education.

Dental CPD would include any activity of learning about oral health and dental practice. It can be done through self-study or through enrollment in group seminars, workshops, training courses or even traditional formal classes. Subjects may be any relevant topic that influences a dental practitioner’s capabilities in providing safe and effective oral health care to the public. Specifically, subjects are categorized as scientifically based and directly related to dentistry or non-scientifically based and indirectly related to the dentistry. For example, learning about particular treatment methods or options to address a painful tooth is categorized as scientific, while learning about how to design your clinic to help calm the patient with a painful tooth is non-scientific. Both subjects, however, contribute in the improvement of your dental practice and your ability to provide adequate service to the patient.

There are many objectives or reasons for why a dental practitioner chooses a certain CPD activity or program. One quality that should be considered is if the activity or program helps keep your mind on your career goals. Although there is a wide selection of subjects you can choose to study, which may expand your preferences, CPD may be used to direct your abilities to a certain specialty or field of expertise. You may choose the activities or programs that will guide your progress towards the type of dental specialist and type of dental practice you want to establish.

As mentioned, CPD is a documentation or record of your efforts for continuing education throughout a professional career. A good quality CPD would therefore need to be any learning activity that is accredited, recognized or certified by the proper authorities, such as the Board of Dentistry or reputable dental organizations that follow a standard. Furthermore, there must be a possibility or a way of subjecting the learning activity to documentation methods. This includes but is not limited to the assignment of corresponding education units or credits per activity completed.

The main concern of taking CPD is for personal growth as a dental practitioner. It is to assure that you are updated with the knowledge and know-how of your profession so that you can better serve the public’s oral health needs. As such, an important quality for effective CPD is that it is self-directed and not forced upon you. Learning is more valuable and successful when it is willingly entered into.

CPD is a process of participating in and documenting any learning activities that a professional undergoes after his or her initial training. It is the collection of review and experience while working and the application of any further learning gained. As a dental practitioner, you are accountable for seeking continuing education that will demonstrate your commitment in providing updated, safe and effective oral health care to your patients. Among the many options for further learning, those you should seek are the ones with qualities of being a good dental CPD program or activity.
