Pochampally is the one and only largest handloom tie & dye cluster with more than 5000 artisans and 2000 pit looms.
Pochampally is the first traditional craft awarded Geographical Indication status.
Around 100 villages of Pochampally earn their livelihoods by weaving.
This was the only art, used all the natural dyes in making its Ikkat designs.
But weaving of Pochampally cottons is such a hard core work that requires dedication and passion. Ikkat or tie & dye is the major and unique techniques of Pochampally.
Basically, cotton, silk and the combination are used in weaving.
Here, weavers follow three ways of preparation for making Ikkat designs, warp Ikkat, weft Ikkat and double Ikkat.
In warp Ikkat, the weft yarn will be dyed and warp yarn will be tied and dyed. In weft Ikkat, the warp yarn will be dyed and weft yarn will be tied and dyed. But in double Ikkat, both warp and weft yarns will be tied and dyed.
The ultimate effort of artisans would come exclusively with dyeing and weaving of pre-coloured threads according to Ikkat. Harmonic colours and shades are in use today to make Ikkat beautiful.
It takes around one to two months of time to weave a 50 meters of fabric. Based on intricacy of designs, motifs, colours and preparations, it may change.
