Scallops, Clams & Mussels-these Three Bivalve Sea Creatures Are Famous In A Variety Of Cookery Items

The word "clam" has no significant information or history in biology. However, in the America the clam is used to mean mollusc having two valves. It also used to for a bivalve other than mussel, scallop, and oyster. It is oval shape and fresh water animal. The clam means species having bivalve and is edible, which is buried in sand therefore some time they referred to clam digging.

Edible clam or not usually all in round or oval shaped rather they can be enlarged and straight razor shaped, having shell.

A clam's shell has two valves, which are connected with a pivot joint and a sinew that is either external or internal. Two adductor muscles of clam close the shell. The clam is without head and eyes. However, scallops are present which a notable exception is, but a clam does contain kidney, mouth, heart, and anus.

Clam has open circulatory system similar to mollusks. Their organ is surrounded by watery blood and this blood holds oxygen and nutrients. They depend for their food on plankton, where as the clam is the food of small sharks and frozen squid.

In the sense of culinary, the clam refers to hard shell Mercenaries; some clam species do also hold soft shell. Clam can be eaten in raw form or they can be cooked in different ways like boiling, grilling, baking and many more. The ways of cooking mainly depends on the size and the species of clam. United States and Canada is famous for their clam chowder soup whereas in other parts of world like Italy and France the clam is used with other food item like pasta and are eaten in many forms. Clam dip is famous in France and Italy. A specie of giant clam known as maxima clam is famous with its use in saltwater aquarium hobbyists. New England clam chowder is somewhat different from the United States flavor as they use some other herbs and ingredients to flavor it.

A scallop is bivalve seafood similar to mollusk belongs to family Pectinidae. It is found in all worlds’ oceans. Scallops are highly prized as they contain very nutritional values. Sea scallops are valued for their bright color. Scallop recipe is famous in all restaurant of the world as they are very tasty and delicious. Cooking scallops are paired with wine in western cuisines where as they are paired with other shellfish to form a zinger seafood dish.

This common word mussel is used for clam and all sea animals having bivalve both from salt water and from fresh water. This seafood creature don’t hold any history rather its history can be applied to clam which has long and wide shell and this shell is wedge shaped and asymmetrical-looking. The external color of the mussel shell is dark blue or brown where as other family member of mussels has light color shell. These live in intertidal and subtidal areas, which are along the coastline of the worldwide seashore. Freshwater mussel species used to live in lakes, ponds, rivers, canals and many more. Whatever it is, the frozen blue mussels taste very yummy and so it is all the rage amidst the seafood lovers.

The zebra mussels are a bivalve mussel, which is native to freshwater. Zebra mussel is named because they have stripped patterns on their shell similar to zebra. All mussels do not contain this stripped shaped pattern. They are usually as long as fingernail or you can say about two inches long.

Zebra mussels were first described in Russia, which was reported to Hungary in 1794. They are D-shaped in shape. They have high nutritional value. They are consumed by crayfish, waterfowl and by muskrats. Their nutritional values change with season and specially protein level and carbohydrate level changes.
