Do you want to be the winner in submission wrestling contests? Having the guts is not enough. Whatever your opponent hurls at you, you must be a quick thinker since this either makes you come out a winner or a loser. When you are knowledgeable in other fighting styles (e.g., Judo, Jui Jitsu, Sambo, Catch Wrestling, Shoot Wrestling), you've got significant edge over your competition in submission wrestling matches. Nevertheless, you should determine which one to use as your fighting style because you can't actually expect yourself to be an expert on all the martial arts styles.

Your challenger will have an idea of what you're doing, but you will actually be doing a hybrid style of martial art. The methods are something that have been with us for so many years; they're not techniques you simply conceived. If you wish to perfect your technique, you'll need to do sparring practice. Do you belong to a gym? If so, try to come across other fighters to spar with. You'll have a definite edge on your adversary ina genuine submission wrestling match if your sparring practice sessions have you learning from fighters with various fighting styles. In submission wrestling, things can change in a blink of an eye. You can be on top of your opponent appearing like you're winning the match and in the next moment, you'll be the one pinned down.

Improving your abilities in submission wrestling can be rather difficult. You'll probably meet accidents and injure yourself. While you are practicing, you could dislocate a finger, pull a back muscle, or break a toe. When any of these occurs, you my be sidelined for a number of weeks or even months. Things like these do occur, and you need to get them checked by a medical doctor, even if they are thought to be part of your training. Even the most minor of injuries can get a whole lot worse if they're not treated or seen by a doctor immediately. If this happens to you, you will not be able to train for a few months. With correct training, you can realize immediately when you are in a stalemate with your challenger and either need to release or use a different move. You'll have to count on your gut instincts, since things can happen so fast.

You need to regularly be sparring with different partners, since no two fighters use the same techniques. You will have to spar with different fighters using different techniques if you want to be able to adapt rapidly to every fighting situation in submission wrestling competitions. If you've got your challenger in a submission hold, release them as soon as they verbally say they give up or they tap the mat. There's really no need to keep your hold on your challenger when you've clearly won.

Do not expect to win at all times, however. There'll be occasions when you will lose. On those instances, pay attention to your mistakes and learn from them. Submission wrestling is a very physically demanding sport. Nonetheless, it can be fun too. How well you do in the competitions is up to you, and how much you want to practice.
