Have you ever been to a South Asian Wedding? NO? Then add it to your bucket list. If yes, then you will surely agree when I tell you that South Asian weddings are one of the most lavish parties you would want to be part of. They are beautiful. They are colorful and larger than life. They have everything that you could ask for. Ancient rituals, extravagant traditional dresses, eye-catching jewelries, amazing food and of course, the new found craze in weddings: Dance.

Dance has been the newest addition to the grand affairs of marriage. In ancient times, marriages were considered to be a very sacred affair. They were presided with the elderly members of the families but in recent times, they have rather become a celebratory event. Instead of long-unending rituals, people want to enjoy their wedding and have fun. And nothing makes you happier than your favorite foot-tapping music and some friends along with you. People pay huge sums of money to call the best DJs to play in their weddings. Nowadays, in a South Asian wedding, DJs are customary. And this has kicked of a trend of inviting over DJs to play not just at weddings ...
... but to other parties be it your birthday or even a farewell party. So next time you go to an Indian birthday party and DJs are playing your favorite track or even an Indian sweet 16, DJs in NY are mixing that track, don’t be surprised. Although the disco revolution came in the 1950’s, it wasn’t until the advent of 21st century that DJs were integrated to parties and specially weddings.

Now who exactly is a DJ. A DJ or disc-jockey is a person who mixes popular music which has already been recorded for his audience. Although originally they referred to phonographic disks, they are now mostly done on compact discs. Now it refers to all forms of music, medium notwithstanding. Although the first phonographic device was invented in 1857, it wasn’t until the 1940s and 1950s those kids all over the world would sway to beats from huge PA systems. And it wasn’t until 1975 that the famous scratching technique was developed, albeit mistakenly.

With so many new opportunities for DJs, a lot of people are looking to cash in on the chance. With changing lifestyle, easy availability of equipment and an open mindset of youngsters these days, you can find a lot of budding DJs with their laptops looking for that one opening. Not so long ago, you would expect a South Asian DJ in NJ mixing music. Go to any corporate party, DJs in PA will surely blow your mind with some great tracks. All they need is a laptop and with advancing technology, the need for specialized equipment is fading. Even though professional DJs use those huge pieces with those never ending knobs and switches, there will soon come a time when even they would start to prefer a small portable laptop-like machine. Perhaps small enough to even fit inside your pocket. Only time will tell.
