We are all different in what we prefer to do in our business, and how successful you are with winning new clients depends on many factors. Most often, it's up to you to go out and find clients one way or another as they won't go out of their way to find you. Either way, the best thing is to know yourself and work with your resources the best you can. While you are anxious to build up your business, you also have to be patient when things don't progress as quickly as you'd like. Don't let yourself get stuck in a rut; if one technique isn't working, it's time to try something different.

Don't rule out cold calling, even if you think you're no good at it and the very thought of it terrifies you. Similar to public speaking, cold calling is a practice that comes naturally to a few people but scares many more. What is very interesting about cold calling is that it can work very well if you have a solid offer and solutions. Don't be too quick to put it down simply because it makes you uncomfortable. Before you call anyone, it's a good idea to write out a script so you are prepared. Never rely on the script completely, though, as you also want your own personality to come across as well. The initial discomfort you might have about cold calling can be overcome if you stick with it for a while.

All companies have daily responsibilities that must get done. For you, one of them is active marketing or prospecting for new clients. Do not waste your whole day with this task. This will bring about some rejections.

Make a schedule for maybe a few hours, and then fill it up with emailing, cold calling if you want to do it and even looking through the Yellow Pages and sending a letter, etc. There is more available than you think when it comes to prospecting for clients. It can be frustrating but you just have to keep doing it and things will change.

A smart business owner should have a clear awareness of who his competitors are. While it's fine to know what they're doing, you don't want to be underhanded. It's always best to aim for a positive image at all costs when it comes to your business. But you can also do some intelligence work and try to find out how your competition gets their leads, etc. You might recognize areas they're overlooking that could give you an opening to use for yourself. Being able to generate leads and get prospective clients is nothing more complicated than doing the same things every day--things that you know are going to work. The two primary ways are paid for advertising and free marketing methods. Free isn't always free, of course, you pay for it with your time.
