What Can You Expect From Your Roof In Heavy Rains

A sudden heavy downpour often happens when you least expect it. If you were to add a few more days with heavy downpours or a particularly nasty storm complete with rough winds to the equation, you may have a roofing problem on your hands, no matter what shape your roof is in right now.

So, I ask you this - in the event of a big storm, what can you reasonably expect from your roof? This quick overview may help you sort through things and create the level of protection you need in the event the next heavy storm takes aim at your home.

Once a Leak, Always a Leak?

First, it is important to remember that when the most vicious storms occur, your roof could easily spring a leak, then never show another sign or a leak or problem again. Wondering why? This kind of abuse to your roofing material only occurs every few years.

For example, it may dump several inches of rain on your roof in a matter of hours during one bad storm, then the next few years, you could see far more traditional rains. That’s not to say, though, that you shouldn’t have your roof evaluated if it leaks during a storm. It might be a good idea to check in with a professional residential roofing crew to ensure your home is ready to withstand the next solid rain. Outside of a professional evaluation, though, there are lots of things you can do to make certain your roof performs well no matter what the weather.

Roofs Free of Debris Are Less Likely to Leak

If debris is allowed to accumulate on the surface of your roof, in the valleys, or even in the guttering system, you can’t expect much from your roof when that big storm hits. Instead, you can expect everything to perform exactly as it shouldn’t, and that could create real problems, as well as a much shorter lifespan for your roof.

Fix Those Little Problems

Any time you notice a problem with your roof, have it evaluated immediately. It may seem like a small issue, but once the heavy rains come, you can expect those tiny issues to become much worse quickly. What may have been as simple as a loose shingle a week ago could turn into a gush of water into your living room with a heavy downpour.

Perform a Regular Inspection

One of the single best things you can do for your roof is to have it inspected regularly by a residential roofing contractor. This will not only help you keep it in shape for the storms, but also alert you to any problems that may devalue your biggest investment.

A heavy storm will hit your area at some point, and when it does, make sure your roof is ready for the potential problems.
