Brazil Announced Its World Cup Roster

On Wednesday, Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Brazil coach announced his world cup 23-man squad. Most of the chosen players won last year’s Confederations Cup.

The roster includes 16 players who were in the team that won last year’s warm-up tournament beating world champion Spain in the final. The team mixes talented young stars such as Neymar and Oscar with more experienced players such as Dani Alves, David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Hulk. The past stars like Ronaldinho, Kaka and Robinho were left out the squad as expected.

The squad announcement was a high profile event in Brazil with television stations jugging their programming to broadcast it live. More than 700 journalists, many from abroad, were accredited for the event at a traditional concert house in Rio de Janeiro.

The stars in 2010 World Cup such Kaka and Robinho still had hopes of playing in the tournament at home but were left off the list. Only five players, Julio Cesar, Silva, Alves, Maicon and Ramires, in this year’s list were in the 2010 tournament.

Scolari had already named nine players on the squad. And there are only two spots remaining ...
... in the team. Seven alternates will be announced in the coming days.

Brazil has won 13 of its last 14 matches. The only loss was in a friendly against Switzerland.

Scolari’s revamped squad is not filled with stars but he managed to put together a squad that mixes talent and competitiveness.

Brazil roster:

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar, Jefferson, Victor.

Defenders: David Luiz, Dnate, Thiago Silva, Henrique, Maicon, Dani Alves, Marcelo and Maxwell.

Midfielders: Luiz Gustavo, Paulinho, Fernandinho, Ramires, Oscar, Willian and Hernanes.

Strikers: Hulk, Bernard, Neymar, Jo and Fred.
