All of us have to grow up, which means we all must experience the dreadful and stressful teenage years. Physical and emotional stress, along with hormonal changes, mark some of the more difficult times that teenagers will have. These changes are not easy to understand or deal with, but both you and your children must handle these challenges. On the other hand, the teen years will hopefully be full of beautiful memories for everyone. It is interesting that many adults look back and say their time in high school had some of the best times for them. Many people, however, will think about this time as being one of the worst parts of their lives.
A common negative experience that most children have to go through peer pressure. Teenagers are the most susceptible to peer pressure because it operates at a higher level in high school. It is an unwritten code for some reason to not share difficulties with your parents which makes it hard for us to know what is going on. The best way you can help your kids, if this is what they are experiencing, is to be there for them at all times. If you have a robust connection with your kids, and they have a strong will, things will end up okay. Still, though, we are aware of exceptions to just about all rules regarding teens. Situations such as this can be extremely hard to handle at times. You can even be very direct and simply ask your child if they are experiencing pressure from other children. Everyone can think back to their days as a kid and not feeling adequate in some way. It's a terrible feeling to not feel good at something, and that feeling tends to hang on for a while. It may not be easy to get your child to share with you about how they feel, but it is absolutely necessary to know how they are responding to life's events. Before starting an activity, you should talk with your child to make sure it is really what they want to do. Give them the freedom to talk about how they feel with you. Then, you can take your cues from what is said and offer your wisdom and support. It is easy to get bogged down only looking at one situation, but by looking at how it might be a blessing in disguise will help your child see there might be something different for them in their future.
Struggling students often express their stress by becoming overemotional during these troubling times. Many children will feel inadequate or experience feelings of depression because of their scholastic troubles. Kids that cannot keep up often do not know answers to questions that are postulated by the teacher in class which can sometimes lead to embarrassing scenarios. The best way to handle this from a parent's perspective is to simply be there for your kids if they ask for help. One way you can do this is to sit down and have a talk with them about what is going on and how you can help. Also, be sure to give your child an opportunity to express his or her feelings, and then make clear that help can be obtained.
