Why It Is Time To Stop Focusing On Calories

Every single diet that we follow focuses on one single concept. This concept is Calorie consumption. Dieticians and doctors always talk about how calories is the devil residing inside of us. Hence you will always see the word calorie written next to every recipe. However the obsession with calories does not end here. “Diet conscious” people look up the calorie content of every vegetable, fruit and meat product that they consume. I have been part of the balanced diet conversations.
I have watched my BFF’s try to balance their post pregnancy diet. I have also watched in horror when they have been near starvation levels all in the name of losing weight. But the biggest shock was when they claimed that they were eating healthy and this was their body purging all the “bad stuff” from their body. All the while, I kept eating normally while they kept scoffing at me . However, six months later we decided to check what our weight loss was. Guess what!! I had lost 10 to 20% more than them.
So how was this possible? To understand this, we have to look at this analogy. Each of us has a four wheeler. These vehicles run primarily on fossil fuel. In fact, they are called guzzlers for a very specific reason. Now we all know that burning fossil fuels is extremely harmful to the environment. Does this mean that we stop using fossil fuel? Instead, we are using products that release lesser pollutants into the air.
The same goes with your body. Do you know what happens during digestion? We all know that the digestion process gives us energy. However, do you know what the output of this process is called? This is the same “devil” called as calories. This is a part of the natural process. If you try to reduce the energy output, the impact on your body will be extremely severe. You will lose weight- There is no doubt in that. However, are you ok with dragging yourself through the day? This type of dieting is the reason why 99% of first time dieters abandon the process after a few days.
So what is the other option? Well the best option is a balanced diet. This means that you do not ignore any food group. This means that you should eat normally. This includes all types of fruits, vegetables and meats. However, there is an important aspect which you should not ignore. This is the exercise aspect. Exercise is similar to the motor-oil you add to your vehicle.
It acts as a lubricant and helps you burn the digested food much faster and in the correct way. So stop looking at the calorie count and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
