Insulation Tester: An Important Item For An Electrician
Total Articles: 38
For any electrician, it is important to have a good array of items and equipment which he can use when he is going out on duty. The job of an electrician is a very perilous one and it is important to have reliable instruments which will not endanger him or his clients. The first step in ensuring that is to buy stuff from reliable and reputable sellers. Once you make these purchases, they should also check whether they have any other glitches so as to ensure that they work fine in every condition.
The insulation tester is very handy equipment that is a must for any good electrician. The function of insulation tester is determine the integrity of windings or cables in motors, transformers, switchgear, and electrical installations. The test method is used to determine whether the type of equipment being tested and the reason for testing is safe enough for use.
Let us understand this with an example: When an electrician is testing the electrical cabling or switchgear which is low-capacitance equipment, the time-dependent capacitive leakage and absorption leakage currents are very insignificant and then they would decrease to zero almost instantly. But there will be a steady conductive leakage current flow and it is reached almost instantly (a minute or less) providing perfect conditions for the spot-reading/short-time resistance test using an insulation tester.
On the other hand, when the equipment to be tested is a long run of cable, large motor, or generator which is high-capacitance equipment, the time-dependent currents will last for many hours. These currents as a result will cause the meter readings to change constantly and will make it totally impossible to obtain an accurate steady reading.
However, this condition can be overcome and this is done by using a test that establishes a trend between readings, such as the step voltage or dielectric-absorption test. These tests do not depend on one reading but will be dependent on a collection of relative readings. But these tests are extremely time-consuming and the insulation tester thus comes as a boon and helps to conduct the test at the fastest way possible. The Megger Insulation Tester is one of the best in the market and a lot of electricians prefer to have it because it is cheap and also one of the most efficient insulation testers in the market.
Kyoritsu Insulation Tester is another such tester which is very popular with the electricians. It is available in most hardware stores and can also be bought online. There are a lot of online stores which sell such electrical equipment, but it is very important to buy them from only reliable stores because most of them are rip-offs and if you settle for a cheap deal, you will have to suffer the consequences and it might even be dangerous.
