How To Collect And Care For Die Cast Models
Total Articles: 3
Die cast model cars and motorcycles offer enthusiasts the ability to own a wide variety of vehicles. They are appealing to many car enthusiasts and collectors because of their similarities to the real thing. Diecast models offer details and quality that other model vehicles simply can't match, making them quite popular. While die-cast models have eben around for many years, they didn't fall into favor until the late 60s and early 70s. This prompted many companies to enter the field including Matchbox and Hot Wheels. However, most lacked the quality of detail and construction of the original die-cast cars, which made them less appealing to many collectors.
Today, the value of a die-cast model depends on a number of factors which include the condition of the model, whether or not the original packaging is still intact, among other things. Properly cared for die-cast models will not only last for many years, they will retain their value, if not increase in value, of the years.
Whether you are new to die-cast model collecting or if you have been collecting die-cast models for years, there are a few things you should do to ensure the longevity and value of your collection for many years. First and foremost, if you are fortunate enough to have the original packaging for your die-cast models, take care to ensure the packaging remains in good condition. Routinely remove lint, dirt, dust and other debris by wiping the packaging with a dry cloth. Try to keep from using a wet cloth to clean the packaging as it can damage the material and reduce the value of your model.
Also, protect your models and packaging from fading by keeping them out of direct sunlight. If you have a display case, try to keep your models, especially those in their original packaging, in the case and away from the harmful rays of the sun. Sunlight can also fade the paint on die-cast models, although it does take some time for this to happen. This is why it is imperative to keep your cars protected from direct sunlight.
It is important to refrain from trying to touch up defects on your die-cast models yourself as this can cause more damage than repair. If you have an older car that needs to have some work done, take them to a professional. Otherwise, simply leave them in your display case as they can still be worth a lot of money even if they are not in pristine condition.
Lastly, if you have questions about the value of your collection or need to get some information on a specific model, consult a professional. You can check with a variety of online sources such as specialty collectors sites and such. Or, if you are lucky enough, you can take your car to a collector's shop in town.
