Parenting Choices - The Ones You Need To Make
Total Articles: 8
Most parents are committed to raising their children in the best possible way, but there are always issues that can leave you confused about which approach to take. You might wonder if it is better to rule with an iron hand or simply be there as a friend. The following will help you decide which strategy you would like to use as you parent your children.
The first rule of parenting, in order to have a strong relationship with your children, is to spend time with them. It is important to spend one-on-one quality time with each of your kids so that they know that they are special. This should be a time as distraction free as possible, not while the TV is on or while you or your child is in the middle of another activity. You can do almost anything that the child enjoys including playing a game with them or flying a kite. Doing this every now and then will help you keep an eye on how your child is feeling and what their needs may be. Visiting with your kids, and staying in touch, is an important part of parenting that both of you will appreciate.
An unfortunate decision that many parents make is borrowing the parenting skills that they experienced from their parents. Now, in some rare cases, this isn't a problem, but this is only if you had the ideal parents who made no mistakes. As is common, our parents probably did the best job that they could, but made poor decisions along the way. The idea isn't to be different for its own sake, but to consciously choose areas where you could do better than your own parents. If, for example, your parents had trouble when it came to enforcing discipline, you should study this issue and make sure you didn't inherit a similar tendency.
As a parent today, it can be tempting to organize every moment of your child's life. Your kids simply need to learn how to be independent, something that will not happen if you're mothering them every day of the week. You obviously don't want to leave young children unsupervised, but there's nothing wrong with letting them come up with their own games and forms of entertainment. All children need to go outside and do things that are unscripted and fun, outside of what the television has to offer. These are ways to help foster creativity in your child.
Most people can be great parents, however it takes a lot of patience and determination to become one. It is our job to do our best to raise our children, making sure to take the time to focus on them and to always be calm and not angry. The above tips on parenting are some of the ways you can make your everyday interactions with your children more positive.
