A very popular sport in recent decades is riding mountain bikes. Even if you don't know that much about cycling, you should have heard of these. When you look at the history of bicycling, mountain bikes are not that new. Bikes with these characteristics are much more rugged than your typical models.

You'll see that the tires are much wider, and the frames are thicker than usual. These bikes are made for off-road riding. That is why the tread is so thick. Since mountain bikes are constructed for off road riding, you are going to lose a lot of speed when you do this. You will be very happy with the comfort level when you ride these bikes as they are designed to be that way. There is a class of bicycles that are known as hybrids, and actually this type of bike was seen a long time ago in the late 60s. They were called banana seat bikes because that is what the seat resembled. This type of bike is typically used just for fun, actually not good for anything but that. They are usually designed with extended handle bars, that are meant to be ridden on level ground and do not go fast so they do not need extra gears. As you can easily imagine, there is not a huge market for these bikes but some people still buy them. This is the perfect bicycle for those who tend to be easy going.

If your objective is to do serous touring, what you should be looking at are touring frames that will suit your purpose. In this case you'll want this type of frame, which is lighter than most but sturdy enough to hold a good amount of weight. For this purpose, you need a decent drive train, though you probably don't want to buy the costliest ones you can find. Research drive trains and learn more about them because that will help you make the best decision. Touring frames can be recognized in a number of ways, but one sign will be eyelets in places such as the dropouts in the rear. Touring frames are constructed with these threaded holes for mounting racks both in the rear and front.

If you want to try something new, hybrid bicycles are things you may want to give a try. Mountain bikes and touring bikes are much more popular, yet you could use this bike and see what you think.
