The working of the device-
The car black box or the event data recorder is usually installed under the seats or the dash board and are triggered by electronically sensing faults or problems in the engine or an abrupt change in speed. Some of these devices are built to continuously record data until an event such as a crash suddenly stops them, while others are activated by the crash or accident. They store the information internally and such information is retrievable; whereas others can transmit the data to some pre-designated remote location. In most vehicles, the car black box is part of the restraint system control module and the information it provides is of immense value as it furnishes all the information relevant before, after and during the crash.

It tracks the activity of the driver and gives information regarding the conditions before, during and after the accidents. It is not only useful in cases of crash, but insurance companies are also usually keen that people install these devices in their cars. There are also an increasing number of drivers, especially first time or teenage drivers, who are keen on installing these devices in their cars to monitor their driving. The only possible concern with this device is of privacy; however, all its advantages definitely outweigh it.
