Parotid Gland is basically a salivary gland. A recent statistical study made in the UK revealed that 3 out of 4 parotid tumors (75% of all parotid tumors) are non-cancerous (benign). Parotid gland cancer is rarely incurable. This surgery is then followed by a radiation therapy. However, for treating parotid gland cancer of late stages, chemotherapy is used.
The most basic symptom by which parotid gland cancer is predicted is an unusual enlargement of the parotid gland. This enlargement of parotid gland causes a drastic change in the symmetry of the case. This unusual enlargement of the parotid gland also creates difficulty in eating, swallowing, and opening the mouth. Other symptoms of parotid gland cancer are, fluid draining from the ear, pain, numbness, and weakness of the face, a weird swelling or lump in the cheek, jaw, mouth of neck. Parotid gland cancer causes constant lumps and pain in the face. A primary doctor will ideally recommend the person probably suffering from parotid gland cancer to consult a parotid gland tumor specialist at a center for advanced parotid tumor surgery like the Center for Advanced Parotid Surgery. The probable patient of parotid gland cancer has to have a complete head and neck examination with radiologic evaluations by a CT scan or an MRI.
