Save The Environment Buy Cloth Diapers
Cloth diapers Toronto have come a long way and they're increasingly popular today. More and more parents are worrying about the environment - for good reason. According to Environment Canada, more than four million disposable diapers are discarded in Canada each day. It's estimated that it takes 500 years for a disposable diaper to decompose in a landfill. Cloth diapers are also cheaper than disposables. The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto claims the average cost of a disposable diaper is about 20 cents. Cloth diapers from a diaper service are roughly 12 cents each. If you wash your own diapers the cost is about 3 cents a diaper after the initial purchase. What's more, most cloth diapers today are a lot cuter than any disposable. You can buy cloth diapers in anything from blue and purple gingham to shocking pink and leopard print! If you're worried about the practicalities, you could always use disposables some of the time - at night or when you're traveling, for example, or try a diaper laundering service - they collect the dirty diapers and drop off the clean ones once a week.
If you're expecting, or you have recently welcomed a new life into the world, the question of whether to use disposable or cloth diapers has likely surfaced. Before making a decision based solely on convenience and convention, also consider the environment, what's best for your baby and your budget. Biodegradable disposable diapers are available, but they are hard to find and even more expensive than their landfill-bound counterparts. In contrast, cloth diapers are economical because they're used repeatedly, and there are reasons to use them even beyond the obvious environmental benefits. From baby's viewpoint, comfort is the bottom line. A standard cloth diaper is constructed of a square of soft cotton, five to seven plies thick, and two Velcro tabs that replace the pins of the past. Compare this to layers of pressed wood pulp surrounded by a film of polypropylene, polyethylene or other plastic. In between these components is a layer of sodium polyacrylate, a super-absorbent chemical that transforms urine into a gel-like substance, which stays next to baby's skin. Cloth diapers are also highly absorbent, but without the aid of chemicals and man-made materials. In addition, cotton "breathes" to allow evaporation to take place, reducing the risk of skin irritation.
Diaper rash appears on the skin under a diaper. Diaper rash typically occurs in infants and children younger than 2 years, but the rash can also be seen in people who are incontinent or paralyzed. Almost every baby will get diaper rash at least once during the first 3 years of life, with the majority of these babies 9-12 months old. This is the time when the baby is still sitting most of the time and is also eating solid foods, which may change the acidity of the bowel movements. Identifying a diaper rash is usually fairly easy. The rash is located on skin underneath the diaper area. The skin is red and irritated. It may appear all over your baby's bottom or genital area, or only in certain places. It may or may not involve the folds of the skin. It is usually not necessary to call the doctor for a simple rash. Keeping the diaper area clean and dry should prevent most diaper rashes. However, even the best prevention is sometimes not enough. It is very rare to need to go to the hospital for rash. However, should your child appear to be in severe pain, or if you notice rapid spread of the rash with fever, you should seek medical attention.
