As important as finding cheap travel options, such as cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages are, knowing where to eat at your destination can help make your trip all the more enjoyable.

The following apps can ensure that you are never far from a great meal again whether you are looking for the best undiscovered restaurant in a new city or just want something quick near your gate at the airport, according to Smarter Travel:

• Airport Ace has a database that includes over 7,000 airport restaurants. Users can sort the venues by terminal or concourse.

• HappyCow is the world’s foremost restaurant guide app for vegetarian, vegan, and vegetarian friendly restaurants. The app displays restaurants in over 150 countries.

• GateGuru lists nearby food options after you upload your itinerary. Restaurant ratings are shown from other fliers.

• MyFitnessPal is a free calorie counting app. This app’s database offers nutritional facts on over three million food items, including many fast food and restaurant options. Users can track their exercise, if so inclined, to determine if they are eating more calories on vacation than they are burning.

• OpenTable enables users to instantly confirm restaurant reservations at over 27,000 restaurants in the U.S. and abroad with no service fee. Every time someone makes a reservation using OpenTable, that person earns Dining Points, which can be redeemed for Dining Cheques, good at any OpenTable restaurant.

• LocalEats reviews local food blogs, papers, and online ratings to determine quality restaurants in many cities across the U.S. and lists the very best. Users can search for a restaurant based on their GPS location (or by city and state) and type of cuisine and the app will return a list of curated options. No national chain restaurants are listed on this app.

• IExit displays food, gas, and lodging options that are available at upcoming exits. Users can display what is nearby or as far away as 100 exits down the highway. Coupons are provided that users can use to discount meal prices.

• Yelp has over 42 million restaurant reviews. Users can search for restaurants sorted by type of cuisine, price range, and location and then view user reviews in the results. Users can upload photos to see what food really looks like before ordering. Hours of operation are displayed. This app shows deals and coupons at nearby restaurants.

• Airport Maps provides detailed gate maps and a list of dining options. It works without a data connection. Currently contains 61 North American airports in its database.

• Foodspotting enables users to recommend great dishes (instead of restaurants). For example users can search for deep dish pizza in Chicago and view photos and reviews of the best pizzas in the city.
