Pawnbroking is a booming business that many entrepreneurs have taken an interest in. The NPA (National Pawnbrokers Association) is the best resource available for those considering opening a pawn shop. It is certainly not a simple process, but if you are willing to put in the hard work it takes to become a pawnbroker, now is an exciting time to be part of the pawn industry. Dating back 3000 years, the pawn industry has seen its ups and downs. While, in recent history, there have been many negative stereotypes associated with pawn shops, modern pawnbrokers have been working hard to change this image and the NPA has been at the forefront of these changes. In fact, since it was founded in 1987, the NPA has been working to support and promote responsible pawnbrokers in the United States.
In a volatile economy, where many new businesses fail, pawnbrokers are seeing their businesses thrive. That is because a pawn shop does not need a thriving economy to do well. Pawnbrokers can help people in need when times are tough, and even in a thriving economy people will always need access to quick cash. Furthermore, in general the culture is changing and people have a different view of purchasing secondhand goods. When done right, a new pawn shop has a great chance for success.
An aspiring pawnbroker has to have expert knowledge in many different fields. Finance, business, second-hand goods, jewelry, fine art, and gold – the list goes on and on. Furthermore, a pawnbroker has to do more than apply for the regular business license that most new businesses need. A pawnbroker license is required in addition to many other licenses depending on the state of operation. There are rules and regulations on the federal, state, county and local levels. The pawn industry intersects with many other industries such as precious metals, jewelry and firearms so a pawnbroker also needs to have the proper licenses required of each of these industries.
The NPA knows what it takes to open a new pawn shop and offers support to those looking to enter the industry. An Apprentice Membership is available for those in the process of becoming a pawnbroker. With this membership comes the full support of the NPA with all the resources and knowledge an aspiring pawnbroker needs to successfully get his or her business off the ground.
The National Pawnbrokers Association (NPA) is the only trade association of the country supporting pawnbrokers and the industry on different levels since its inception. The industry has been evolving in recent years, and the NPA has been there every step of the way providing support, representing the industry at the national level, and preparing and educating pawnbrokers to represent themselves to the public. They work tirelessly on behalf of the pawnbrokers and are involved in many philanthropic activities such as funding scholarships, organizing Musical Instrument Gift Day and supporting C.O.P.S.
