Don’t Overpack

Chronic overpacking for trips can cause problems on a trip that otherwise was planned well by carefully reviewing cheap travel options, such as cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, and cheap vacation packages.

All is not lost. The following are tips on how to fix your bad packing habits from Smarter Travel:

• If you are not traveling with children, your goal should be to pack no more than what can be packed in a carry-on that can fit in a plane’s overhead compartment. By packing lighter you will be able to avoid paying checked baggage fees and stop having to waste time waiting at a luggage carousel. Yet another plus is never losing your bag again.

• Only pack clothes that can be worn more than once. Pack clothes that can be mixed and matched and worn a few times. It is smart to keep most of your packed clothes within the same color palette so that they do not clash.

• You will have a greater variety of outfits on your trip by packing more tops than bottoms. Ideally, pack no more than one or two pair of pants.

• Pack toiletries that perform multiple tasks, such as two-in-one shampoo and conditioner, and a shampoo bar that also works as body wash and shaving cream.

• Ideally limit yourself to carrying only two pairs of shoes: one for walking and one for dress up.

• Pack as few electronics as possible, remembering that many gadgets multitask. Multiple gadgets tend to take a lot of space particularly when you consider their assorted cords and chargers. Think about space saving gestures such as transferring your music to your cell phone and not taking your iPod on your trip.

• Lay out all of the clothes that you plan to take. The reality is that people tend to overpack and ultimately regret bringing certain items of clothing. A good bet is that you will not use/need all the clothes you plan on taking.

• Do not pack “just in case” items that you will only bring for a situation that is unlikely to occur such as a dramatic change in weather. Instead if you find upon arriving at your destination that you need a dramatically different outfit than what you packed, go shopping.

• Avoid packing at the last minute which tends to result in a messy bag, forgotten essentials, and mismatched clothing. Pack early so you have time to clean clothing you want to bring, or buy something for the trip. Early packing also affords you time to trim down once you start packing.

• Only pack the clothes you like the most. Clothes not worn at home are unlikely to be worn on vacation.
