Deepawali – Festival of lights:
‘Deep’ means ‘light’ and ‘avail’ means ‘row’ and combined together ‘Deepawali’ means ‘row of lights.’ Deepawali, most commonly known as ‘Diwali’, is celebrated across the country with great zeal and enthusiasm. This is probably the only festival that is celebrated for different reasons among various communities in India and abroad. The most common belief is that Diwali is celebrated to welcome Lord Rama, his wife Sita and brother Lakshman to Ayodhya from a 14-year exile in forest. During this time, Rama killed Ravan, king of demons, and people celebrate Diwali by lighting diyas and candles to mark the victory of good over evil. However, today fancy lights have taken over diyas and candles.
Houses and offices are cleaned and decorated with bulbs and diyas, sweets and gifts are exchanged and above all Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped. It is supposed on Diwali that Lord Vishnu and Lakshmi got married and thus people worship Lakshmi to bring wealth and prosperity. However, it is still not known to many why Ganesha is worshipped alongside Lakshmi instead of Vishnu on Diwali. It is widely believed that while adopting Ganesha from Goddess Parvati and to show love and affection, Lakshmi assured Parvati that whosoever worshipping Lakshmi will have to pray Ganesha as well in order to get his/her wish granted. This is the reason why Lakshmi and Ganesha are always worshipped together.
Indians associate Diwali as a festival of joy where every moment has to be cherished to keep their spirits high in an otherwise fast and hectic life. They indulge in visiting and sending out gifts to their loved ones. Markets flood with various options such as sweets, consumer electronics, home decoration items, paintings, designer lights, stylish diyas and perfumed candles.
Holi – Festival of Colors:
Holi is the one of the celebrated festivals across India, especially in the Hindu community. Most of us are aware of how mischief Krishna was. His pranks are very famous and, especially that he used to do with Radha and other gopis. Once, Krishna applied colors on Radha and other gopis on the ghats of the river. Since then, Holi is celebrated to mark the friendship and love between Radha and Krishna.
Applying colors on each other is the main way to celebrate Holi. Meeting relatives and friends adds joy to the colors of Holi. Visitors are greeted with delicacies such as gol gappa, gunjiya, jal jeera, matri, and dahi bhalla. Dry colors and colored water rules the roost and are the integral part of celebrating Holi.

It’s observed during the Hindu Month of Bhadrapada (mid-August to mid-September) and this year it’s happening on 9th September. Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most celebrated and widely accepted religious festivals in India.
It is believed that Lord Ganesh bestows his presence on earth for all his devotees during this festival. It is the day Shiva declared his son Ganesha as superior to all the gods barring Vishnu, Lakshmi, Shiva and Parvati. Ganesha is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or at the start of travel.
In India, it’s celebrated by artistic clay models of Lord Ganesha made byespecially skilled artisans. These idols are beautifully decorated and depict Lord Ganesh in vivid poses.
