Turn Into A Better Parent By Building These Parenting Skills
Total Articles: 2
There aren't many who would claim that parenting is simple but, as with most things, there are skills that you can cultivate that will help you be better at it. When everything is going well that's when you can figure that you're making good parenting choices. When things start to get difficult, though, you might think about working on some of your parenting skills.
It is important to be consistent when you discipline your kids. This is hard for a lot of parents to be but if you don't develop this skill you can rest assured that your kids won't pay much heed to your directives. You need to think long and hard about the rules and consequences you set up: do not make threats or promises that you do not intend to keep. For example, if you tell your daughter she can't watch television for a week, don't let her watch television for a week. When you give in you tell your kids that your word isn't worth much and that it can safely be disregarded. Children will, obviously, test you and your resolve so it is important to stay firm.
One skill that's important for parents to develop is becoming interested in what their kids are interested in.
This can only go so far, of course, but your son or daughter will be very appreciative of any efforts you make to become even a small part of his or her world. A common example of this is finding the time to attend an event in which your child is participating whether its a sport, music, a play or art show. Even if you don't really like the activity you should make a point to learn about it so that you can bond over it with your son or daughter.
It is hard for a lot of parents to deny their children the things that they want. Learning how to say "no" in a way that is both kind and firm is a skill that will help you and your children tremendously. It is important that you actually tell your kids why not giving them whatever they want is best for them. Allowing them to eat as much ice cream as they want can make them sick now and obese later on. Even if the child doesn't appear to understand this explanation, or care about it, part of his or her mind is absorbing it, so it's still worth repeating. In situations like this, especially because your kids will probably keep asking you, it is vital that you stick to your guns. There are lots of parenting skills that can help make your job a lot easier while simultaneously helping your kids learn very important life lessons. It is important, of course, to find a way to apply these skills that is congruent with your child's age and personality too. You and your kids are only human and mistakes are going to be made but we all have the capacity to learn and use our mistakes to become better people.
