Fundamental Skills For Every Single Parent
Total Articles: 7
There aren't many who would claim that parenting is simple but, as with most things, there are skills that you can cultivate that will help you be better at it. When everything is going fine, that's a time when you can assume you're making the right choices. If you run into hardship, though, it might be time to work on your parenting skills.
Lots of parents make the mistake of not allowing kids to learn how to do things themselves. Part of how we learn is by making mistakes and if kids are not allowed to make their own mistakes, they'll never learn to take care of themselves. Obviously you need to protect the kids from making mistakes that could cause major harm to their health or well being but in smaller areas it is important to allow them to find their own ways. If, for example, you take over and do the work when your son has trouble with a homework assignment, how will he learn the lessons himself? Part of growing up is figuring out how to finish things by yourself even if it means that you will be making some mistakes along the way. One particular skill that you and your kids would do well to learn is time management. If you have problems with time management your kids probably will too. Children (and grown ups alike) are particularly susceptible to feelings of frustration when they feel like they're running out of time to complete their tasks (like homework). It's a good idea to instill at least basic time management strategies into your child's awareness as early as possible. Since you're the parent here and, therefore, in charge of the schedule, it is important that you learn how to effectively manage time yourself.
Every parent has a parenting style that will come to them naturally but sometimes these styles should be modified particularly if you tend to wave back and forth from one extreme to the other. There are some parents who are very strict and authoritarian and that is a reflection of how they were raised. Today, though, kids need to be taught to think for themselves and if you are too strict this won't happen, your kids will either be extremely docile or extremely rebellious. Of course, when you are too permissive, your kids won't have any real sense of boundaries and will likely grow up to be very undisciplined adults.
Studies prove that "authoritative parenting" a mix of permissive and authoritarian parenting styles works best for kids. As a parent, there are a multitude of skills that will make your job simpler while also allowing you to teach your kids important and valuable life lessons. Obviously you will need to find a way to apply these skills that is appropriate for your child's age and personality. You and your children, obviously, are human and mistakes are going to be made but everyone has the capability to learn and grow both from mistakes as well as successes.
