Long Island’s approximately 7.7 million inhabitants can’t possibly protect themselves from the harsh New York weather without a roof over their heads. Meanwhile, roofers can’t perform their jobs well without reliable roofing supplies on hand. The most important roofing supplies in Long Island are as follows:
Roofing Material
Shingles, tiles, and other roofing materials are what people see when they look at a roof. These materials can be made from wood, metal, stone, or composites, all of which play a significant role in creating a durable and beautiful covering. Some roofing materials from certain brands come with better warranties, while others boast of better features like moisture resistance, easy installation, and the like.
Roofing Underlayment
This thin strip of tar paper or synthetic membrane is what separates the roofing material from the roof’s frame or truss. The main purpose of the underlayment is to provide moisture control and prevent water infiltration. This component is arguably the second most important in any roofing system because a faulty underlayment can lead to severe leaks and inadequate ventilation.
Flashing
In homes with external roof features like dormer windows and chimneys, small gaps and spaces inevitably form that allow small amounts of water and moisture to seep through. Roof flashings are required to cover these holes and create a tight seal on the entire roofing system. Common flashing options include lead-coated copper, galvanized steel, and stainless steel.
Nails and Adhesives
All of the aforementioned roofing supplies won’t stay in place if they’re not nailed down or glued together. However, it will never do to purchase nails and adhesives haphazardly because these products must match specific types of roofing materials. For example, weather-resistant steel clout nails, and not just ordinary nails, are needed to fasten shingles into place.
