Electricity nowadays literally makes the world go round. Our whole lives depend on it. All of your appliances, gadgets and even tools run or depend on electricity. These equipments operate using specific voltages and frequencies. These intricacies in electricity are made simple by transformers. The main reason why people need transformers is to ensure that we use the correct voltage for our equipments.
It is important to note that voltage and frequency vary from one location to another. For example, you purchased electrical equipment in the United States and let’s say you will use it in France. There is a huge possibility that the item won’t work or might be damaged because United States and France do not generate voltage and frequency in the same way. Transformers are then needed so that electrical equipments will be used without causing any damage. Transformers are designed to adjust the voltage coming into the equipment into a proper level. It will then pump the electricity through the same equipment so it will operate properly.
To make the definition a whole lot easier to understand, transformer is described as a device that transfers voltage from one circuit to another through magnetic coupling. Parts of the transformer do not necessarily have to move for the energy to be transferred. Another simple way to describe a transformer’s use is to convert between high and low voltages.
A Grounding Transformer and Furnace Transformer consist of two coils called the primary and secondary both of which are connected to a magnetic field. These coils serve as conductors and the capability of the Grounding Transformer or Furnace Transformer to hold power is determined by the number of coils.
The most common type of transformer is called the distribution transformer. This type of transformer is the one that we see in our neighborhood and they are mounted on a pole that’s why it is also known as pole-mount transformers.
Electricity is generated at the power plant. Electricity travels a long way before it can reach our homes. Transformers are carriers of electricity so it can reach our homes for our electrical equipments to work. Transformers at the power plant increases the voltage to the level required to transfer the electricity over distances. At the substations, the electricity has to depleted then boosted. This process is repeated until the electric current reaches its final destination. Electricity generated from the power plant final destination is our homes. At that point, transformers need to reduce the voltage so the electrical current will not be too much for our equipments. Without the proper conversion of the electricity’s voltage and frequencies, our appliances, gadgets and other electrical equipments are useless.
Since our lives heavily depend on electricity, it is important to fully understand how electricity is generated and transferred to our homes. We do not need to be electrical engineers to have the basic knowledge about electrical currents and transformers. By simply knowing how electricity travels to our homes, we will be able to better take care of our appliances and gadgets. We can definitely use this information to our advantage.
