About Zyban :
Zyban is an antidepressant in the aminoketone drug class used for smoking cessation also called as antismoking medication. Since zyban does not contain nicotine it helps smokers to quit smoking. Unlike nicotine patches or nicotine gum, Zyban does not put more nicotine into your body. If you use the patches or gum, you should stop smoking so that you don't "overdose" on nicotine. With Zyban, you continue to smoke when you first start taking the medication, eventually reaching a quit-date, and taking the drug for a period of time after quitting. Although ZYBAN is not indicated for treatment of depression, it contains the same active ingredient as the antidepressant medications.
Working of Zyban :
Zyban tablets contain the active ingredient bupropion hydrochloride, which is a medicine used to help people who are addicted to nicotine to give up smoking. It acts in the brain but is not the same as nicotine replacement therapy. It is not fully understood how this medicine works to help people to stop smoking, but it is known that bupropion affects neurotransmitters in the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are stored in nerve cells and are involved in transmitting messages between the nerve cells. Neurotransmitters are released from nerve cells as a message is transmitted. Once the message has been transmitted, the nerve cells then reabsorb the neurotransmitter. Bupropion prevents two of these neurotransmitters, noradrenaline and dopamine, from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells in the brain. Noradrenaline and dopamine are responsible for moderating mood and various other processes in the brain. It is thought that bupropion helps people to quit smoking by increasing the amount of noradrenaline and dopamine free to act in the brain.
How to take Zyban :
Take Zyban exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all directions on your prescription label.
When first start using Zyban you may continue to smoke for about 1 week.
Set a date to quit smoking during the second week of treatment. Talk to your doctor if you are having trouble quitting after you have used Zyban for at least 7 weeks.
Your doctor may prescribe nicotine patches or gum to help support your smoking cessation treatment.
Read all directions and safety information for the nicotine product. Do not smoke at any time if you are using a nicotine product along with Zyban. Too much nicotine can cause serious side effects.
Do not stop using Zyban suddenly, or you could have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Ask your doctor how to safely stop using Zyban.
