With the rollout of a new smartphone app by the American Dentists Association called ADA Dental Pathology, yet another player in the ever growing role of technology in medical professions comes into the fold.
The sixty dollar app has been widely embraced by the dentistry community, facilitating itself as a constantly updated databank of dental diseases and ailments from the obscure to the endemic. The app is revolutionary not only for its convenience but its breadth. The oral health field, particularly as it relates to online dental education is, like all medical fields, in a constant state of evolution and flux. Taxonomizing and memorizing any number of ailments can come as a challenge to even and in some cases especially seasoned oral health professionals and tenured dental educators. The app is poised to be an invaluable and persistently used resource to the industry and the academia both.
Apps like ADA Dental Pathology are not a new entity in oral health technology. eProcrates RX is a free app for the iPad that keeps an up to date although less comprehensive database of oral diseases, like a clinical reference library. It includes a drug guide as well as a drug interaction checker and formulary information. ePocrates RX has versions of itself that can be bought for up to two hundred dollars that include information pertaining to disease diagnosis, including insurance codes, alternative medicines, diagnostic tests and even illustrations.
The internet age has democratized information of all kinds. Companies, medical institutions, oral health publications and enthusiasts are grasping the opportunity to make the most of these technologies and turning out applications and websites in litany. As the information and practice of oral hygiene spills over from acedemic and medical fields into private business and startup companies, the benifits of this kind of overwhelming zeitgeist become clear. Patients and dentists alike are embracing new ways to interract with one another and educate themselves as the field of dentistry grows into the twenty first century. Like the internet itself, dental education has spread all over the globe to the farthest and most obscure corners of the globe. People who just decades ago were unable to attain refrigeration or mechanical time keeping can now access almost an form of information they desire at any time of day or night. The overall health of these people is improving drastically as a result, and oral health is in many ways at the forefront of this globalization of medical education. It falls to the countries and medical communities at the forefront of their fields to both take advantage of and contribute to this kind of unprecedented level of access to health information.
