Things To Consider When Buying Hid Headlights And Bulbs
Total Articles: 6
HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. Nowadays, people are mostly using HID headlights in their cars rather than traditional halogen headlights. The HID lights help enhance both the look and performance of the car. Now let’s take a look at its composition.
Composition of HID lights
HID refers to the process of light production by the bulb. The mechanism of producing light inside the involves the usage of around 20,000 volts to ignite the xenon gas and metal halide contained within a sealed glass tube between two electrodes just above the bulb’s base. The bulbs do not have any metal filament inside. You may ask about where the bulb gets the initial voltage from while the car’s normal voltage is 12 volts. It’s done by the help of ballast which helps generate the required 20,000 volts to illuminate the bulb. Performance-wise, HID bulbs generate 3 times brighter light than halogen bulbs.
Efficiency and Safety when using HID lights
As it is already mentioned, HID lights are 3 times brighter than ordinary halogen lights. This, in turn, gives a clearer view of the road while driving at night and in the rain. As per studies, almost 60% of all accidents, which are caused at night, are caused due to poor lighting. Studies conducted on drivers’ reactions further reveals that drivers were more accurate and faster in reacting to roadway obstacles when they were using HID lights than halogen lamps.
Also, HID headlight kits build up the look of the vehicle significantly. Form durability point of view, HID lights last longer than ordinary halogen bulbs. They are manufactured in a way to last up to 10 times longer than halogen lights. In terms of working hours, HID lights work for nearly 3 thousand hours as opposed to the conventional halogen lights that have a life span of nearly 3 hundred hours.
Furthermore, HID lights are shock-resistant since no filament is used inside the bulb. The ballasts used to facilitate the light production by the light help protect the inner side of the light from dust and water. In terms of power consumption, HID lights consume less power than conventional halogen bulbs, so they are energy efficient. This entire process results in less carbon dioxide emission by the vehicle since it burns less fuel for lights. And, less carbon dioxide emission means the vehicle is environmental friendly.
A few Bulb purchasing tips
Before purchasing an HID kit find out the ‘H’ number of the halogen bulb used in car. Generally the bulb fitment plugs are coming 12 different sizes from H1 to H12. These numbers refer to the bulb holder sizes. So you need to buy the bulb with respect to the size of the holder. The ‘W’ letter indicates the watt or power consumed by the bulb. More power is consumed if the wattage is higher. You need to buy HID lights of less wattage (35W in general) since they are already brighter.
